CÂRȚA

* Cistercian monastery from Cârța It was, in the Middle Ages, a Cistercian monastic settlement in the Făgăraşului Country, a subsidiary monastery of the Igris Abbey. It is one of the oldest and most important monuments of the early Gothic style of Transylvania. Cistercians is a monastic order originating in France, and spread in several countries. The establishment of the monastery from Cârța was dated in 1202, during the time of King Emeric. From the whole of the monastery, at present, a chapel is used by the Saxon evangelical community. The Cistercian monastery Cârța played a major role in the political, economic and cultural history of medieval Transylvania, as well as in the introduction and dissemination of Gothic art in the intracarpatic space.
