RUPEA
Although it does not seem from a distance, the fortress is divided into three levels, which test your physical condition, to conquer them and to see with your eyes the wonderful panorama from the top. Called simply, "The Citadel from above" (14th century), "The middle citadel" (with two enclosures from the 15th century) and "The Citadel from below" (17th century) betrays its different moment of construction, by the type of masonry, but and of the architectural layout, corresponding to the siege techniques of the time. Once equipped even with a lift bridge, the fortress still retains only the fortress towers, named after the type of utility they had throughout the time: · Tower of the gate, Tower of the Servants, Tower of Slăninii (initially called the New Tower), in the fortress below · The Tower of Hungary, the Pentagonal Tower, the Tower of the Scouts (equipped with a secret gate), the Tower of the Chapel, the Tower of the Gods (which is supposed to house the fortress archives), the Thick Tower and the Powder Tower, in the middle citadel The history of the fortress of Rupea is marked by the rebellion of the Saxon elite against King Carol I (Karoly) of Hungary, in the 12th century. XIV (1324), who also left the fortress after the Turkish invasion of 1421. From that moment, the fortress remained in full possession of the Rupea chair. In the sec. XVI, the fortress was permanently inhabited by several hundred Saxons: about 100 dwelling houses populated the fortress, along with warehouses for supplies, weapons and documents, administrative spaces, chapel and the priest's house, carriage place, a fountain (deep 41 m, whose location is indicated today inside the citadel), but also a fair place (in the Fortress of the City, the locality having at that time a fair status). The Rupea fortress was never conquered or plundered, but was gradually abandoned since the first half of the century. 18th century, in the new calmer regional political context and after the political assurance guaranteed by the army of the Habsburg Empire. The legends of the Rupea Fortresses are an attraction in themselves, because they are related to the great Dacian ruler, Decebal. Although unproven archaeologically, the legend says that here the days in the Dacian fortress Rumidava would have ended, on the ruins of which the fortress of Rupea would have been built. Another legend speaks of the obligation of the married young people from the Rupei chair, to contribute with a stone to the construction of the fortress, thus becoming part of the community.
