Curciu is a quiet village in the commune of Dârlos, near Mediaș, between hills, forests and former vineyards. The settlement is located between Târnava Mare and Târnava Mică, in a landscape that has been jokingly named “Mesopotamia”. Far from the crowded tourist routes, Curciu retains the atmosphere of a Transylvanian village where time seems to flow more slowly.

Known in German as Kirtsch, the village has been documented since the 14th century. Curciu developed around the evangelical church, and the traditional households, quiet streets and hilly landscape preserve the traces of a community built over several centuries.

The Fortified Evangelical Church of Curciu

Erected on a hill in the center of the village, the church is one of the most valuable Gothic buildings in the Mediaș area. The three-nave basilica, dedicated to Saint John, was built at the end of the 14th century.

Worth noting are the richly decorated western portal in stone, the Gothic niche for the choir stalls, the tracery windows, the bell tower and the organ built in 1844 by Samuel Mätz. The tower houses three historic bells, and next to the fortification gate is a Gothic chapel, the lower level of which was once used as an ossuary.
