The site of Community Importance (SCI) covers an area of 25,903 hectares and has been designated for the purpose of protecting biodiversity and maintaining a favorable conservation status of spontaneous flora and fauna, as well as natural habitats of interest from the central-northern part of the Brașov County. 

In Transylvanian Highlands you can admire this protected area around the villages of Jibert, Dacia, Lovnic, Șona, Racoș, Hălmeag, Șoarș, Ticuș, Ungra, Dăișoara, as well as the surroundings of the citadel in Rupea.


The site presents a natural area with four types of habitats (Dacian oak and hornbeam forests, Galio - Carpinetum hornbeam oak forests, Asperulo - Fagetum beech forests and Euro-Siberian forest vegetation with Quercus spp.) which shelter and preserves a diverse range of flora and fauna. 


Here you can find many birds species (migratory, passing by or sedentary) different species of wild duck or woodpeckers, greater white-fronted goose (Anser albifrons), Eurasian woodcock (Scolopax rusticola), common snipe (Gallinago gallinago), long-eared owl (Asio otus), common buzzard (Buteo buteo), little owl (Athene noctua), hoopoe (Upupa epops), blackbird (Turdus merula), European robin (Etithacus rublecula), European roller (Coracias garrulus), great grey shrike (Laniumb excubitor), stock dove (Columba oenas), corn crake (Crex crex), the common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus), cirl bunting (Emberiza cirlus), the horned grebe (Podiceps auritus), Eurasian blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla), the common whitethroat (Sylvia communis) and many more.

If you are fond of plants and flowers, you will be delighted to spot beauties, such as: felwort (Swertia perennis), Ligularia sibirica, bird's-eye primrose (Primula farinosa), Sesleria coerulans, meadow foxtail (Alopecurus pratensis), Listera ovata, the globeflower (Trollius europaeus), viper's grass (Scorzonera humilis), rampions (Phyteuma tetramerum), Spiraea salicifolia, green-veined orchid (Orchis mario), yellow loosestrife (Lysimachia punctata),  the elder-flowered orchid (Dactylorhiza sambucina) or the lesser butterfly-orchid (Platanthera bifolia).

How to Visit:

The area is located in the in the immediate vicinity of several communes (Jibert, Comăna, Șoarș, Ticuș, Ungra, Racoș, Șercaia) and the town of Rupea,  along the national road DN13, which connects the Brașov and Sighișoara. 


Red strip and red cross marked trails from Rupea to Făgăraș and the villages around, take you across this protected site.

The Natura 2000 protected areas are best discovered on foot, by horseback or by bicycle, on the marked routes that leave each village. No entry fee.
