Vlad Olariu, “Shadows of the Unseen”

In Shadows of the Unseen, Vlad Olariu constructs a paradox of form and meaning: works that imitate the gravity of historical masterpieces while, at the same time, undermining their authority from within. They are relief sculptures—flattened, fragmentary, suspended between surface and volume—that carry with them the echo of permanence yet reveal its fragility. Their format recalls classical friezes, where narrative, architecture, power, political ideology, and religious belief once intersected. Here, however, the stories are unstable, the materials fragile, and the characters indistinct.

Quellgeister is a long-term research project into the unique character of abandoned church organs in Transylvanian fortresses, left in decay after the exodus that followed the fall of communism in Romania. The artist’s aim is to investigate the various transformations these ritual machines undergo once left without human presence—gradually altering their inner material composition, developing their own spirit and climate. He observes the sonic progress of things/organs left behind. Since 2008, the project has been in full testing phase.
