About the Bărcut Fortified Church:
The church in Bărcut, located in the upper part of the Hârtibaciu Valley, may not seem particularly spectacular at first glance. It is a relatively new hall church, built in 1846 on the site of an older, smaller church with a slightly sharper roof, as can be seen from the base of the roof on the east side of the tower. The Baroque altar from 1766-1767 was incorporated into the new church, along with the pulpit from 1792. In 1866, the old organ was replaced with a new one built by Samuel Binder from Sighișoara.
The solid tower, 36 meters high, is impressive. Its walls are 3 meters thick on the lower floors. Access to the tower is via a wall staircase in the lower two floors. Since this staircase is only 60 to 70 centimeters wide, the tower could easily be defended by a single person. Legend has it that giants helped build the tower, and when the work was finished, the locals threw them into the deep well inside the church. Come visit us and see for yourself the tower’s massive structure, which likely gave rise to the legend.
In the buildings surrounding the church – the former German school and a neighboring house – we offer hostel-style accommodations for youth. The Children's Museum is located in a wing of the former German school. The parsonage on the hill is also set up for overnight stays, and the spacious cultural hall can accommodate 200 people for meals.
