About the Fortified Church in Selistat:

About Seliștat, which is located at the springs of Hârtibaciu, it is jokingly said that it is "at the end of the world" - and the exaggeration is not great! If you want to drive through Selistat in the direction of Movile, you have to look for the road first, and if it's raining, it's better to walk.

In this idyllic place, the Transylvanian Saxons built a hall church at the beginning of the 14th century. The tower was added as part of the expansion of the fortified church. After the emigration of most of the Saxons in the 1990s, the parish house, former school and cultural hall were renovated and turned into a youth center. Every year recreational activities for children and young people take place in these buildings. The church was also able to be renovated due to its inclusion in a project to renovate several fortified churches, with European funds. In 2023, the works on the church and the fruit house next to it were completed. Even though there are no regular services in Selistat, the church is used for community celebrations, choir rehearsals and concerts. A special feature is the altar painting made by the painter Fritz Schullerus (1866-1898), who depicted Jesus as a Jew (with a beard and wavy bangs) and depicted in his painting a biblical story atypical for an altar. Visit the small but beautiful church in Selistat, discover other special features of the altar and enjoy the view from the tower.

If you like hiking, you can take it step by step on the ecological education route, accompanied by the display panels about the plants and animals of the area, or you can opt for the audio-hike between Seliștat and Bărcut, during which at various points (stations) you can listen to stories about the two villages and the life of the people in the area.
