On March 9th, we embark on a new journey to explore the protected areas of Sibiu County. This time, we’ll uncover the secrets of a nature reserve dedicated to the conservation of waterbirds: The Mândra Ponds Nature Reserve.

We will meet in the morning at 9:30 AM in the Kaufland Veteranilor parking lot (opposite Hornbach Sibiu). After a brief introduction to the day's itinerary, we will drive to the village of Mândra, where we will park near the lakes at the edge of the village and begin our birdwatching hike.

Our walk will take us along the embankment road that follows the fishponds near Mândra. We will observe wintering waterbirds with the naked eye, binoculars, and a spotting scope. Along the way, we’ll discuss the protected areas of this region, including The Mândra Ponds Nature Reserve and the Natura 2000 Podișul Secașelor site.

The wetlands of Mândra have been an important gathering site for rare aquatic bird species since the 19th century. From 1990 to today, 161 bird species have been identified here, including 89 breeding species.

Our guide will share fascinating insights into the world of birds, from those that spend the winter in Romania to those that migrate back in April to nest in this remarkable area.
