BIERTAN

Discover Biertan, a town with a rich history and picturesque landscapes, located halfway between Mediaș and Sighișoara, on DN14. Follow the signs from the village of Șaroș towards Târnave, or you can reach Biertan from Agnita, on DJ 141 (towards Mediaș), and then on DJ 141B, through Richiș.

Biertan, nestled among wooded hills and orchards, was founded in the 13th century by Saxon settlers drawn by fertile soil and excellent viticultural conditions, transforming the area into the true "Land of Wine."

Documented in 1283, alongside Mediaș and Moșna, Biertan is one of the first German-Saxon settlements in Transylvania, included in the "Two Seats" (Mediaș and Șeica) according to the Andrean Diploma of 1224.

The fortified church of Biertan is one of the most photographed in the area and has managed to preserve its original appearance from the 15th and 16th centuries. The central building of the ensemble is a hall church with three naves, rib-vaulted, built in late Gothic style, with elements of Renaissance architecture. The church-citadel, the last building of its kind erected in Transylvania, is dedicated to Saint Mary and was restored through donations from natives of Biertan scattered throughout Europe, the United States, and Australia.

With 3 enclosures, 6 towers, and 3 bastions, the church is surrounded by an atmosphere charged with history. Inside, you will find the largest polyptych altar in Transylvania, carved in wood by a master from Sighișoara, and numerous other artistic treasures.
